Price Paid:  $280.00 at Cycle Sport UK

Favorite Ride:
Trek Navigator

Bike Setup:
I have intermittent problems with my back, so cycling position is important to me. I switched the standard seat to a softer and wider format, with the suspension seat post adjusted to my weight. I raised the handlebars as far as they would go and rotated them towards me to reduce how far I had to lean forward. I also swapped the rubber faced pedals for metal toothed ones to stop my feet from slipping off in the wet. All of this was done by the bike shop at no cost to me. Cycle Sport UK in Grantham take customer service seriously.

Summary:
I am a Brit, so the 280 purchase price is in pounds. I bought the bike for country roads as an alternative to my Trek Navigator, which I use off-road. I wanted something with lower rolling resistance for 20 mile runs, but that could still go across fields if required. Smooth gear changes, just a click thats all and its done. The gear ratios allow me to get up to 24mph on the flat (with no wind), and yet the megadrive still gets me up long steep hills without too much sweat! the front suspension works well without wallowing. The suspensio seatpost is a great idea and workds very well to provide additional shock protectio to the spine. The bike is metallic black and I paid extra to add silver mudguards, a chrome back carrier and two chrome bottle cages. It looks terrific and I have had many admiring comments.

Strengths:
Everything about the gears; the click-click way they change; the spread and spacing of the ratios, and especially the megadrive. This is a smooth and comfortable ride.

Weaknesses:
The front and rear derailleurs took some setting up to get them just right. The cables stretch a little during the first few rides; not much, but just enough to give niggling problems. I view this as normal, not a fault. I only mention this so that readers will persist with adjustments if they are having problems. The extra attention to detail will pay off with the really smooth gear changes that make the bike a delight to ride.

Similar Products Used:
Trek Navigator. Its not really that similar. I mention it to praise Trek. I would say that they bill it as a "comfort" bike. It looks like a mountain bike, but with a more upright stance. This is the bike that really hooked me into biking as a recreation rather than just another form of transport. The bike came with wide, semi-slick tyres (a compromise to give grip off road, but with low rolling resistance on the road). When I bought the 7100 as an additional bike, I replaced the standard Navigator tyres with a slightly narrower tyre with a more aggressive tread pattern. Down the centre of the tyre is a hard zig-zag that is in contact with the road, plus the usual knobbly tread everywhere else. To my astonishment, not only did I get the expected upgrade in off-road grip, but the rolling resistance is noticeably lower. Reluctantly, I realise that I now don't need the 7100! This is no fault of the 7100 as it is a great bike, the fault is mine

Price Paid:  $249.00 at Gift

Favorite Ride:
Trek 7100

Summary:
I'm a nimble 70years old and hadn't ridden for some years. Wow, what an improvement the suspension forks and saddle make. I found this easy and precise to ride on roads and smoothish tracks, but soft earth stopped it because the tyres aren't wide enough - I'm not doing that anyway. I'm using it with a pair of panniers, and there's not problem with the weight, added to which the gearing, so easily selected, allows me to ride up almost all the gradients - almost all!
It's well put together and has a very sturdy frame - bit like me really!

Strengths:
See above

Weaknesses:
The frame might be a little heavy if you're doing a lot of carrying
